36 Hours in Toronto- Magazine Spread

Designed an 6-page magazine spread, using body copy from a New York Times article by Sarah Wildman

When we drew straws in Typography class to select our cities (seriously) to design spreads for, I was a bit disappointed that I drew Toronto. “My classmates are getting to talk about cities like Tokyo, New York, and Paris… Who’d want to read about a Canadian city?,” I asked myself arrogantly. However, the more I worked on this project, the more I grew to appreciate, and even love, Toronto.

Process

Picking a font and body text style was tough, but after enough experimentation, I settled on a style, with Avenir as the font. It reads well, and it has a striking resemblance to the font used for the “TORONTO” city lights that I used for my cover photo.

After finalizing my typeface and paragraph styles, I got to work actually designing the magazine spread. The top row showcases my first drafts, with very little color. I liked the photo of the Toronto sign so much that I decided to use it for the first page, and I pulled the blue, green, red, and yellow highlighting colors from the sign and placed them behind the photos.
